Make Money Mondays, The Money Show with Bruce Whitfield

'I don’t need millions. All I want on my tombstone is... Best Dad Ever'

Mark Pilgrim and his wife, Nicole.

We have listened to your tape but unfortunately you still need a great deal of practice. The main problem is your diction, particularly with the pronunciation of the letter ‘R’.

702’s rejection letter to Mark Pilgrim

I’m white trailer trash. In England, I literally grew up in a trailer. But I have all my teeth. But it still disturbs my wife when I say ‘you can get the box wine’. My wife’s a Sandton Kugel, she doesn’t like that.

Mark Pilgrim

I don’t need to earn millions. I just want to provide for my family… All I want on my tombstone is, ‘The best dad ever’.

Mark Pilgrim

Every week The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviews a famous person about her or his attitude to money (hopes and fears, successes and failures, etc.) as part of his weekly “Make Money Mondays, Personal Edition” feature.

This week Whitfield interviewed former 94.7 and KFM presenter Mark Pilgrim.

Pilgrim started his illustrious radio career at 5FM in 1995.

He quit radio, kind of, in 2014 to open a frozen yoghurt store.

Pilgrim, a heart attack survivor, is an ambassador for CANSA and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of SA.

He recently returned to university to study for an MBA.

He holds a B Com in Industrial Psychology.

  • But what is it that he believes about money?

  • Does it keep him up at night?

  • Does he spend like crazy, or save compulsively?

  • How did his childhood experiences shape his views on money?

Listen to the interview in the audio below (and/or scroll down for more quotes from it).

Fortunately, cancer pushed me to do what I loved doing…

Mark Pilgrim

I’m a DJ that works for school fees…

Mark Pilgrim

I will not borrow money. I will not go on holiday with money I haven’t earned…

Mark Pilgrim

I was 9 [when he came to South Africa]… My mom was South African; my dad was a sailor…

Mark Pilgrim

No [when asked if he regrets not becoming an accountant]…

Mark Pilgrim

Best money decision ever? Buying that diamond ring for my wife! And being really financially responsible…

Mark Pilgrim

I’ve put some money into property… I’ve got a pepper farm… business is picking up…

Mark Pilgrim
