JMPD won't apologise for impounding unroadworthy taxis - report

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) and Joburg Mayor Herman Mashaba says they will not hold back on road safety operations in the city.

JMPD Chief David Thembe, the mayor and MMC for Public Safety in the City of Johannesburg Michael Sun took the media on a tour of an impounded vehicles compound in Johannesburg on Tuesday.

The tour comes after 500 taxis belonging to the Alexandra Taxi Association were impounded at the weekend.

Eyewitness News reporter Katleho Sekhotho has more on the story.

We were taken through the pound area in Johannesburg Central where we saw hundreds of taxis, trucks, various vehicles which have been impounded since January up till now. It was highlighted by the JMPD chief that they are targeting any unroadworthy vehicle.

Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba says we are not going to apologise, we are not going to hold back. Threats from associations and drivers who say they are going to strike, it does not scare the city or the JMPD - they have actually been asked to increase operations and reinforce the laws.
