[LISTEN] NHI implementation will take massive reorganisation - Aaron Motsoaledi

Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi announced last week, amendments to two bills including the National Health Insurance (NHI) Bill.

The NHI is designed to improve the lives of poor South Africans who cannot afford medical aid, and cannot afford to go to a private clinic.

There has been some skepticism over its implementation with some saying the quality of healthcare should be prioritised.

Motsoaledi says the bill will require massive reorganisation of the system.

Massive reorganisation means we have to change things in the manner in which people know them, what scared people going into the public sector - problems of poor management, shortage of staff... because people have not seen it and do not understand it, they have to start by being skeptical.

Asked about issues of corruption and responding to questions surrounding a report by the Special Investigating Unit, linking Former Gauteng Health MEC Brian Hlongwa to corruption amounting to R1.2-billion, Motsoaledi says the law must take its course.

My understanding is once the matter is already in the hands of SIU, the next step is to take it to the NPA to start criminal charges.
