Keeping with the school holiday theme, creative parenting expert Nikki Bush chats about pursuing creative and relaxing activities for kids during the school holidays.
Bush says that there are a lot of things parents can do that don’t cost that much, and day dreaming in colour is one of them.
She adds that there’s a lot of visual arts craft that kids can enjoy like colouring in, puzzles and dot-to-dot books.
We quite like creating order out of chaos and a dot-to-dot is kind of chaotic until you start sequencing the numbers in the right way.— Nikki Bush, creative parenting expert
I think that we can learn so much through play which makes learning less stressful says Bush.
She adds that when we talk about colouring at a preschool level, we like to talk about big, format colouring in books.
There's a lot to be said about not encouraging young children to use colouring in books per say because that is not imagination at play, that is somebody else creation that they are just colouring in.— Nikki Bush, creative parenting expert
Bush says that we’re taught to colour in between the lines and not make any mistakes. The reason why we give children colouring books is to improve their eye–hand coordination.
Bush adds that children should be given blank paper to explore their creativity.
