Why it's important to encourage children to be bilingual

Language expert Dr Chisato Danjo says children raised in bilingual households find a ways to use language strategically.

Dr Chisato Danjo a lecturer in Japanese and Linguistics at York St John University in the UK, says children who are raised in households where parents come from different cultural backgrounds and different language find a way to use the language strategically.

She says, depending on what needs to be accomplished, human beings tend to use language strategically. For example if a child wants to ask for money from his/her parents using venicular might help them in getting their request attend to quickly.

By shifting from English to Japanese you incorporate Japanese cultural elements and emotional attachments...

If you restrict children to one language you are restricting them to reaching their full linguistic repertoire.

Danjo says parents should learn to observe more closely what their children's language abilities are and encourage the use of more than one language to strengthen their linguistic capabilities.
