'We want the public to hold us to account' - Sars boss

Acting South African Revenue Services (Sars) Commissioner, Mark Kingon, says his team is ready to be held to account as tax season begins.

Kingon briefed the media, along with Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene, at the Sars Alberton campus on Monday.

Kingon joined Joanne Joseph on the Afternoon Drive.

What I am trying to do is simply say that we, as a management team, are trying to do the right thing by engaging the public in a very transparent manner, in showing that where we do have errors - that we deal with that in a professional way and that we be held to account in terms of the standards we set for ourselves.

The agency has also launched its Service Charter. Kingon explains how this serves as a guide to the responsibilities of the revenue service and the taxpayer.

The service charter is simply there to say this the timeline that you can expect and if you are not happy with those timelines, you have a channel where you can complain. If you are still unhappy with Sars you can go to the tax ombud...
