Every now and again we read about the record price some or the other work of art fetched on auction.
A few weeks back, for example, the Rubens masterpieces “Portrait of a Gentleman”, with an estimated value of R8 million, went up for sale.
The 420-year-old painting was smuggled from Germany in the 1930s, and has been hanging on a wall in a house in Johannesburg since that time.
Another Rubens painting coming up for auction in July is expected to fetch R90 million.
