Stuck in a timeshare contract? Here's some advice...

A number of people have been complaining about the timeshare industry and its operations.

The National Consumer Commission and the Department of Trade and Industry have received most these complaints.

The contract itself is beyond the short-term contract but in terms of common law, consumers have a right to give a supplier 30 days notice which is a reasonable contract for them to end that contract.

During the inquiry, the suppliers most of these vacation club owners have agreed that if consumers want to opt out they will allow them to do so.

The issue that we are struggling with is the money that they had paid in advance to this vacation that most of them could not even enjoy.

Mabuza says consumers who have been blacklisted and are denied opting out of their contract should contact the Consumer Goods and Services Ombud on 0860 000 272

Timeshare is a legal concept which allows one to own a share of a unit/apartment within a resort development for a determined period. A timeshare interest is, therefore, the exclusive use of accommodation in a property for a determined or determinable recurrent period of time annually.
