The Everard Read Gallery, Joburg’s oldest art gallery, was first established in 1913 when the city was a young mining town. It’s also said to be the continent’s oldest commercial art gallery on top of it.

The gallery moved from the city centre to its current location - a purpose-built building in Rosebank - in the late 1970s and the building in which it is housed is a celebrated icon of South African post-modern architecture.

It’s a contemporary structure comprising of sculpture courtyards and four exhibition areas with a series of windows, ensuring plentiful daylight.

Known to support a wide variety of local artists from different schools, and with the exhibitions changing regularly, Everard Read Gallery ensures that there’s always something new to cast one’s eyes upon.

Everard Read Gallery has a full annual calendar of new exhibitions and showcases of the top South African artists and sculptors with its openings favourably attended by the city’s who’s who.

Across the road is its sister gallery, the contemporary landmark Circa Gallery, run by the same management. Both Circa and Everard Read galleries are must-see stops on any art enthusiast’s itinerary.
