Top mistakes to avoid when insuring your phone

When it comes to cellphone insurance, it's always safer to double check says consumer journalist Wendy Knowler.

Consumers can insure through their cellphone provider or via household or car insurance policy, Knowler.

Either way, it is important to make sure that your policy covers you for the correct value of your phone and the current device you are using.

Cellphone providers typically provide insurance linked to the SIM card, while household or car insurance policies cover the device, irrespective of the SIM in use.

Seven top tips on cellphone insurance:

  • When you upgrade your phone, make sure that you upgrade your cellphone insurance at the same time.
  • For a claim to be valid for a network provider, the listed SIM must be in the device at the time of the event.
  • Always remember to update your policy to reflect the current handset if you upgrade your device.
  • Make sure that you are not still paying premiums for a phone that is no longer in use.
  • Check the replacement value of your insurance.
  • Compare prices between network providers and private policies.
  • Always check your bank statements.

Paying an excess amount at claim time is a lot less devastating than bearing the entire cost of replacing your stolen car, repairing that fender bender or losing everything in a house fire.
