I grew up in a family that emphasised the internal… versus material symbols of status…

Jesse Clegg

Last year I bought a house… hopefully that’s going to be a good asset. I buy some shares sometimes… My brother is obsessed about Bitcoin… My dad is very good [at investing]. He’ll always let me know when there’s a hot share… I always go with his advice…

Jesse Clegg

He [Johnny Clegg] gave me a great tip last year… I bought MTN and made a bit of pocket money; thanks dad!

Every week The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviews a famous person about her or his attitude to money (hopes and fears, successes and failures, etc.) as part of his weekly “Make Money Mondays, Personal Edition” feature.

This week Whitfield interviewed singer-songwriter Jesse Clegg.

Clegg, born in 1988, spent the first six years of his life on tour with his famous father, Johnny Clegg.

Clegg, who plays around the world, has three commercially successful studio albums.

  • But what is it that Clegg believes about money?

  • Does it keep him up at night?

  • Does he spend like crazy, or save compulsively?

  • How did his childhood experiences shape his views on money?

Listen to the interview in the audio below (and/or scroll down for more quotes from it).

I got to see the unglamorous side of the music business…

Jesse Clegg

The album is almost promotion to get people to your shows… Now, physical albums, people don’t buy them... your income is from streaming… and musicians are having to go out on the road more…

Jesse Clegg

I’ve always been quite cautious with money… my biggest expense is investing back into my art…

Jesse Clegg

As an artist you have to be a good businessman… It’s a lesson I’ve learned over the years; it’s very useful!

Jesse Clegg

I majored in law and English literature… the broadening of your perspective, and vocabulary, it’s very good for lyrics…

Jesse Clegg

I’ve got three more weeks of my 20s! The party’s almost over…

Jesse Clegg

…I lost a lot of money, because we overspent on production…

Jesse Clegg

When you’re in the gig economy, you have to be conservative…

Jesse Clegg

I trust that it’s going to work out… I’ve learned to be calm… and to let things unfold the way they will.
