Duduzane Zuma to appear in court on Thursday on two counts of culpable homicide

The son of former President Jacob Zuma, Duduzane Zuma, appeared in the Commercial Crimes Court on Monday morning where he was granted bail of R100 000.

Zuma has been charged with corruption in connection with the alleged failed attempt to bribe former deputy finance minister, Mcebisi Jonas.

EWN senior reporter Barry Bateman says the case against Zuma indeed relates to the bribing of Jonas, promising him R600 million and a finance minister's position in 2015.

The charge sheet makes it clear that Ajay Gupta is the main suspect and state that Zuma acted with a common purpose with the Guptas in an attempt to bribe Mcebisi Jonas.

Bateman says the defence has made it clear that the States's case against Zuma is a weak one because it is Jonas's word against theirs.

All the accused, Zuma, Ajay Gupta and Fana Hlongwane have denied all the allegations of trying to bribe Jonas.

One thing that does go in Jonas's favour is that he came out of that meeting with Zuma and the Guptas and went straight to Nhlanhla Nene informing him that his job was on the line. And that proved to be true because Nhlanhla Nene was then fired and replaced with Des van Rooyen.

Bateman says there is already a concern that this matter might become another derailment of the NPA case like it happened with the Vrede Dairy farm case.

He says Zuma will appear again in court on Thursday on charges of culpable homicide related to the car crash he was involved in.
