The state of mental healthcare for the elderly is a growing concern says Prof
3 in every 10 South Africans that are older than 60 will need medication for mental health in the future.
This statistic is one of the main reasons why industry professional, and Member of the South African Society of Psychiatrists Professor Felix Potocnik is raising concerns around the state of mental healthcare for the elderly in South Africa.

Professor Potocnik says that in a couple of decades, we’ll constitute about 70% of the worlds aging population.
He adds that one of the major issues is dementia, which is a condition that’s difficult to treat and can last as long as 23 years.
This condition can be very draining because it takes an immensely emotional and financial toll on all those involved.
Professor Potocnik says that they have treatments for all these conditions. These treatments can make managing patients easier for the caregiver he adds.
