Africa State of Mind: From humble beginnings, to a musical empire in Nigeria

Award-winning artist Banky W is reshaping the music industry one artist at a time. If he’s not signing artists like Wizkid, he’s pathing new ways for African artists.

As one of the most followed people on social media, Banky W is writing well thought out pieces, hosting Presidents, and performing on stages around the world.

I’ve had a very interesting career; my first job was working at McDonalds and at one point I was selling knives says the Nigerian artist.

I thought the knives were too expensive and at that point in time, I decided that I would only sell things that I believe in so I quit.

Banky W says that he knows the mindset amongst parents has changed towards professions in the entertainment industry.

Back in the day, if you told your parents you were into music, fashion or anything like that they would think that you were crazy because you have to be an engineer, or a doctor, or something like that.

Banky W, award-winning musician and songwriter

I tell kids all the time that parents behave that way because they’re coming from a place of love and concern.

My parents were a little nervous about me quitting my job and going into the music business but to their credit, they gave me their blessing eventually.

Banky W, award-winning musician and songwriter

He says that when he started making yankee R&B music, he felt like that was what had been missing all along.

The thing about destiny is that until you actually find your passion and your purpose, you’ll never really be happy or satisfied.
