Beira, Mozambique has lots of markets but no shopping malls

Lee Kasumba is on her Standard Bank Africa Connected journey is in Beira, Mozambique.

She has been travelling across Africa to discover just how easy it is to do business on the continent and to gain insights into Africa's markets.

READ: Beira, one of Mozambique's largest cities, doesn't have the population

Speaking to Bongani Bingwa, Kasumba says with regards to the movement of goods to the ports into the inland, the infrastructure is old.

One of the biggest challenges that they have is that they do have railways, but the infrastructure is really old, so they are currently working to upgrade that.

And similar to what we have seen in South Africa, the trucking business has become really lucrative in this case because they have had to pretty much take the place of the railway system.

But again, unfortunately, because the road networks aren't so great, the trucks are not really helping with regards to that.

Lee Kasumba, broadcaster and podcast host

So this is something that the government really is going to have to focus on in order to ensure that the ports, outside of being really profitable for this city and the entire country as a whole, the systems that come out of it will also benefit.

Lee Kasumba, broadcaster and podcast host

She says what has really been interesting is that she has not seen a single shopping mall in Beira.

Interestingly enough, almost similar to what you see in Ethiopia but not quite the same, you do have a lot of markets that fill up this gap.
