The who's who of KZN and Gauteng ANC's new leaders

Five new top officials for the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng were elected over the weekend.

KZN saw Sihle Zikalala elected as chairperson, Mike Mabuyakhulu as the deputy chair, Mdumiseni Ntuli was hailed as the provincial secretary while Sipho Hlomuka as the deputy provincial secretary and Nomusa Dube-Ncube as treasurer.

The Gauteng party members elected David Makhura as chairperson, Panyaza Lesufi as deputy chair, Jacob Khawe as provincial secretary, Namantu Nkomo-Ralehoko as deputy provincial secretary and Parks Tau as treasurer.

Speaking to Eusebius McKaiser EWN reporter Ziyanda Ngcobo who covered the KZN elective conference, says there were many reasons why the KZN conference was important not only for ANC members but for citizens as well.

Whoever was elected during this KZN elective conference is important for citizens to asses whether or not there will be capable leaders to salvage the crisis that is happening within municipalities across the province.

Ziyanda Ngcobo, EWN Reporter

It is important for the President, for him to consolidate power and losing the grip that former president Jacob Zuma had on Kwa-Zulu Natal.

Ziyanda Ngcobo, EWN Reporter

She adds that the conference was important indirectly, because it also means that issues such as ethnic nationalism that was seen to crop up over the last couple of weeks will also then no longer have enough power to influence and destabilise the ANC.

But I think most importantly it's the link between who is running the ruling party and directly affects service delivery in Kwa-Zulu Natal.

Ziyanda Ngcobo, EWN Reporter

Also speaking to McKaiser was political reporter at eNCA Samkele Maseko who says the most interesting battles at the Gauteng conference was that of MECs.

You had that spat between Jacob Mambolo who is the MEC of Infrastructure in the province and SACP provincial secretary, that spat he had with MEC of economic development Lebohang Maile who lost out on the deputy chairmanship of the province to Panyaza Lesufi.

Little did the two of them know that Panyaza Lesufi would be running a ground campaign in the grassroots of the ANC branches which he began about six or seven months ago, even prior to the Nasrec conference.

Samkele Maseko, Political Reporter at ENCA

Basically, he took away power from what was loosely termed as the Alex mafia in the province led by Paul Mashatile. It's no secret that there are ANC members who are discussing this - that Lebohang Maile is seemingly perceived to be Paul Mashatile's proxy in the province.

Samkele Maseko, Political Reporter at ENCA

He adds that they now have a call where David Makhura is trying to build a Gauteng that has his own identity as opposed to over the years.

Where you have seen an ANC that has had Paul Mashatile's identity.
