The DA says it will ask the ANC to remove Manana from the NEC and the Women’s Legal Centre is concerned about the DC process.

Parliament Joint Ethics Committee co-chairperson Aumsensingh Singh says they have not received Mduduzi Manana's resignation letter from the Speaker's office.

Manana issued a statement saying he has resigned as a Member of Parliament on the eve of his appearance at the ethics committee over his behaviour.

Last year, Manana was convicted of three counts of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, after assaulting three women at Cubana in Fourways.

And this week, the NPA declined to prosecute the assault case between Manana and his former domestic worker Christine Wiro.

At this stage, I have not received an official letter from the speaker's office that Manana has resigned. My mandate will only start once I have received the letter from the Speaker of the National Assembly.

The ethics committee has jurisdiction on those currently serving in the National Assembly and not a member who has resigned.

However, the Democratic Alliance Parliamentary Chief Whip John Steenhuisen says this action by Manana is like 'jumping before he is pushed'.

He also questions why the committee took so long to take action on the matter.

The big issue here is why has it taken the ethics committee almost a year to process these charges in terms of the code. This conviction took place in September last year. The ethics committee sat on its hands while Mr Manana languished on the parliamentary benches without taking action.

Mr Manana is not going to escape accountability on this. Civil rights institutions as well as us, we will be pursuing other avenues.

We are calling on the ANC to walk the talk and remove Manana from the NEC of the ANC.

Echoing the sentiments of Steenhuisen, the legal practitioner at the Women’s Legal Centre Bronwynne Pithey says the resignation of Manana is long overdue.

It's problematic that its taken so long and he has been problematic with his attitude to this whole thing. He was very clear last year when he was convicted that he had no intentions of resigning.

The question is why now?
