How I started a profitable micro-business in no time with only R1000

A few years ago The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield gave out R1000 in an entrepreneurship competition.

With that money Valerie Pole founded her business “1000 Beautiful Bracelets”.

I didn’t sleep the night I received that R1000. I was busy setting up my own website, a Twitter account (@1000bracelets) and a Facebook page. I used almost all the social media to promote my product.

Valerie Pole

It took Pole a week to turn a profit.

She sold wherever and whenever she could.

When you’re in a business like this, you have to sell at the first opportunity you get. I sold the first bracelet at my doctor’s appointment and I made the best bracelet sale with my bank manager. I also sold bracelets to the audience via Twitter when I came into the competition that night.

Valerie Pole

Pole brought in a profit of R4850, which she donated to the Starfish Greathearts Foundation.

The experience moved her to write a book “1000 Beautiful Bracelets”.

The book has 77 low cost business start-up ideas, to inspire those without money who would like to start a small business.

I believe anything is possible. The thing I like most is that the book really inspires people who are feeling hopeless.

For tips and inspiration on starting your own business in no time with not much money, listen to Whitfield’s 2014 interview of Pole in the YouTube clip below:

Description of “1000 Beautiful Bracelets” on loot.co.za:

(The book costs R116. Loot.co.za is currently out of stock, but you can add it to your wish list and they will let you know when it becomes available.)

1000 Beautiful bracelets is a motivational book about a woman who won a money show business start-up challenge.

The first part of the book is Valerie’s own weekly diary of the process, from the time she made an impulse phone call to the R1000 The Money Show Challenge on 702/CapeTalk, to the time she won the competition.

The second part of the book is a self-help, motivational section giving tips on how the reader can succeed in starting up and profiting from their own small-capital business.
