On the 31st of July, the Two Oceans aquarium will be hosting an event called Home to Ocean, where the progress made through the plastic free July campaign will be the main topic of discussion.
Manager at the Sustainable Seafood Initiative (SASSI) in WWF South Africa, Pavitray Pillay, spoke about a plastic-free South Africa, and how businesses have responded to phasing out plastic.
Pillay says that there are a lot of economic factors that come with getting rid of plastic bags.
We would have to phase them (plastic bags) out and find better alternatives for people to use.— Pavitray Pillay, manager at the Sustainable Seafood Initiative (SASSI) in WWF South Africa
We started out strong when we started charging for plastic bags but obviously, people don’t really care now she says.
I think the government knows that we have a drastic problem with plastic bags adds Pillay.
She says that banning plastic bags is possible in developing countries.
Places like Rwanda have banned plastic bags and they have done really well.
