AfriForum has laid criminal charges against Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema for allegedly discharging a firearm in a built-up area.
Cellphone footage of Malema firing what appears to be an assault rifle at a rally in East London, has emerged on social media.
According to reports, the EFF insist the device was not a real firearm.
National Police spokesperson Vishnu Naidoo confirms a case has been opened.

In respect to this case, where there is an allegation that an individual discharged a firearm at a stadium just outside East London, that information was brought to our attention. As a state we opened a case of discharging a firearm in a public place.— Vish Naidoo, National Police Spokesperson
