ANC's handling of the land issue will penalise them in 2019 elections - analyst

Political Analyst Ralph Mathekga says the manner in which the ANC has handled the land issue is quite worrying.

He says he thought the party would have more conversation and clarify how they will implement the resolution to expropriate land without compensation.

But instead of facilitating these conversations, the ANC went ahead and passed a parliamentary motion to expropriate without compensation.

I was worried around that time, but I thought the parliamentary processes would at least bring different views from various communities and maybe it could bring in some creativity on how to roll this out better.

Ralph Mathekga, Political Analyst

It is a concern when the party took the position they did a few days ago, saying they are going ahead with amending the Constitution. It actually undermines that parliamentary process...

Ralph Mathekga, Political Analyst

In my view, the parliamentary process has actually begun the process of lessening the tension. When people are talking and they are consulted, even if they disagree, it lessens the tension.

Ralph Mathekga, Political Analyst

Mathekga says by jumping the parliamentary process; the ANC is escalating this policy issue even further instead of seeking a better way of implementing it.

He says because of this he doesn't think the ANC will do better in the 2019 elections.

I believe the EFF will be rewarded by the voters on the margins about the role that they have played in relation to the land issue.

Ralph Mathekga, Political Analyst

This is an achievement. They have managed to push a political party that has 62% of the votes to move on a policy hastily and to move in such a disorderly manner.
