From addict to author: The inspiring story of this CPT mom's journey to recovery

A woman from Cape Town is sharing her incredible story of how she went from addict to author.

Desiree Ann Martin launches her debut memoir, 'We Don't Talk About It. Ever' on Tuesday night at the Book Lounge in Cape Town.

The book describes with brutal honesty her story of addiction, depression and ultimately recovery.

Martin joined fellow memoirist and Cape Talk host Sara-Jayne to talk about the process of putting her turbulent life down on paper.

This has been a dream of mine for the last three decades.

Desiree Ann Martin, author

My childhood was chaotic, to say the least. I was surrounded by every kind of addiction, whether it be alcoholism, gambling, or codependency.

Desiree Ann Martin, author

Martin began using heroin at the age of 24 after a boyfriend gave her the drug as a 'birthday present'.

From there, she says, she went into a spiral of using and depression.

She recently celebrated her 14-year sober birthday and says she wants her story to give other people hope.

There is always hope. I believe that it's possible for anyone to recover, not just from addiction, but any type of trauma.
