Protesters hand over memorandum calling for removal of Mahlangu and Hlongwa

The Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) and Corruption Watch have led a march calling for the removal of former Gauteng health MECs Brian Hlongwa and Qedani Mahlangu.

Hundreds of protesters marched against the ANC's decision to re-elect them to its provincial executive committee (PEC).

Mahlangu was re-elected despite her role in the Life Esidimini tragedy, while Hlongwa has been implicated in widespread corruption at the health department.

Gauteng Premier and ANC provincial chairperson David Makhura was not available to accept the memorandum of demands, says the TAC's Anele Yawa.

Demonstrators instead engaged with the speaker of the Gauteng legislature, Ntombi Mekgwe, who promised to respond within seven days.

Yawa saluted some members of the provincial legislature (MPLs) from the DA, EFF and FF Plus who showed their solidarity for the protest.

Ntombi Mekgwe promised us that they will come back to us within seven days.
