[LISTEN] 'Don't tell me about a gender summit, we know talk is cheap!'

Breakfast Show host Bongani Bongwa on Thursday responded to government's announcement of a Gender Summit to be held at the end of August.

President Cyril Ramaphosa says the event will take place on the 31st of the month, following demands made by the #TotalShutDown protesters.

But Bingwa asks what happened to previous goals set out in 2007, which included having special courts to deal with cases of gender-based violence.

The question is, what is it that their needs to be said that has not been said already? What will another imbizo say to us that has not been said already? The roll call of horror is all too familiar. Do we keep waiting for the next unspeakable headline, be outraged and then what?

Bongani Bingwa, Breakfast Show host

Where are the shelters for women in distress? Are they adequate? Are there enough of them? Who has been fired for not spending budgets allocated to deal with this scourge? Who has lost their job for not taking the women in this country seriously enough?

READ: Women's Day: President Ramaphosa admits government failed women

When are we going to have specialized units for these types of crimes? Remember what we did in 2010? How is it that there can be cases where women have bullets in their heads and several years later the case has not been resolved because there’s been a revolving door of local magistrates? Each one having to start afresh each time?

Bongani Bingwa, Breakfast Show host

Agreeing to summits and even holding them is always the easy part. It’s now time for resolve. That is actually being presidential. Action, bold action. Decisiveness. Change. Real change. Because as we know - talk is cheap!
