Judge Johann Kriegler says it is a happy day for South Africa that Abrahams will finally be out of the NPA.

Chairperson of Freedom Under Law Judge Johan Kriegler says he is happy with the Constitutional Court ruling which confirmed that Advocate Shaun Abrahams' appointment as prosecutions boss is constitutionally invalid.

Kriegler says he is happy to be a South African at this point in time and proud of the Constitutional Court that the country has.

Freedom Under Law approached the Constitutional Court to make a ruling on the matter arguing that Abrahams should not be allowed to remain at the NPA because his appointment was the product of former President Jacob Zuma’s unlawful abuse of power.

The NPA requires somebody of considerable talent, strength, resolution and courage and a big support from the public because it's a big job, it's an essential job.

Judge Johann Kriegler, Chairperson of Freedom Under Law

DA's Shadow Minister for Justice and Correctional Services, Glynnis Breytenbach says the Constitutional Court ruling is wonderful for South Africa and it's justice system because Abrahams appointment has been disastrous form the beginning.

The President should now look for someone who has a proven track record in the criminal justice system who understands that the criminal justice system doesn't operate in a vacuum but operating in conjunction with the South African police force and the correctional system.

It should be somebody who will not bow to political pressure and that's the most important thing. Someone who has demonstrated independence, someone we know will put the interest of South Africa first.

The Constitutional Court has also declared that a section of the NPA Act is unconstitutional and has given Parliament 18 months to amend that Act.

Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Justice and Correctional Services, Dr Mathole Motshekga says the committee respect the court's judgment and they will work swiftly to rectify the Act.
