Daily Maverick's Assistant editor, Marianne Thamm, says that nothing had previously indicated that Minnie would take his own life.

Author and assistant editor at the Daily Maverick Marianne Thamm says that she saw no signs that Mark Minnie would take his own life.

News24 and other outlets are reporting that a suicide note was found on the scene of his death.

The former policeman was found dead in Port Elizabeth on Monday night, with a bullet wound to the head and a firearm next to him.

There are speculations that his suicide may have been staged.

Minnie was the co-author of the controversial book The Lost Boys of Bird Island.

The book allegedly exposes senior National Party ministers who are believed to have been key figures in paedophilia ring that operated during apartheid.

Thamm edited the book and wrote the foreword. She says Minnie made it his life mission to expose these crimes.

My heart really breaks. He put his life and soul into this book.

The implications of what Mark had scratched open were massive. Magnus Malan was the second most powerful man in this country.

The story stayed with him all his life. He did not forget the interviews. He did not forget the investigation and he knew it has been squashed.

I find it very difficult to think that, at his stage, after having exposed this and after having made this his mission, he would kill himself. But one never knows.

Meanwhile, Assistant Editor for News 24 Pieter du Toit says Minnie's death has similarities to the apparently staged suicides he exposed in the book.

It echoes two other apparent suicides that Minnie and his co-author Chris Steyn referred to in the book.

According to the publisher, he was excited about the book launch.

He was working hard on some of the leads that have since cropped up since the book was published.
