Commission of Inquiry into State Capture
Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo
Eusebius McKaiser engages the importance of the State Capture Commission of inquiry with a panel of experts.

The State of Capture inquiry headed by deputy chief justice Ray Zondo has commenced.

The commission will be hearing testimonies into allegations of widespread corruption and abuse of power by senior government officials including former president Jacob Zuma.

Former deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas and former ANC member Vytjie Mentor are expected to part of the first witnesses to give testimony.

The commission was ironically instituted by former president Jacob Zuma in January after he was pretty much forced into doing it.

It will look at the Guptas; the former President's involvement with the Guptas and I think that is the major focus for the public and us journalists.

Pieter du Toit, News24 Assistant Editor

When the commission was announced, there were calls to have it investigate state capture dating back to the 90s and when the democratic government took over.

It would take too long. Our country has been subjected to state capture for the last couple of years and it has had a major bearing on our national finances; politics and it led to the state seemingly being sold out to the highest bidder.

Pieter du Toit, News24 Assistant Editor

Meanwhile, Professor Mark Swilling from the Centre for Complex Systems in Transition at Stellenbosch University says it is up to every citizen to make sure that the commission succeeds.

I think it has the necessary mandate and judicial capacity to really make a difference.

A lot depends on how the chairperson of the commission, Zondo is going to interpret that and what pressures he is going to come under.

There seem to be positive views about his independence and there is a political context which is favourable.
