As a matter of fact: Has the murder rate for women in SA spiked by 117%?

A claim by the Al Jazeera Media Network’s Inside Story programme recently that 'the UN estimates [a] 117% rise in the killing of women in South Africa since 2015” is apparently untrue.

That's according to fact-checking organisation Africa Check.

Senior researcher Kate Wilkinson explains.

They pointed us to a number of different sources which were mainly news articles. The stat was there but it did not attribute it to the United Nations. What it actually said was that this stat was from Statistics South Africa, so that was our first flag in the sand...

We got in touch with Stats SA - what we found was a very special report on crimes against women in South Africa - which showed the number of women murdered per hundred thousand in South Africa. It compared data from the World Health Organisation from for 2015 with data from Statistics South Africa's Victims of Crime survey from 2016/17...

Essentially they were comparing two data sets which were not measuring the same things and should not have been compared. The week after the report was released with the shocking statistic, it was actually revised and that number was taken out.
