The Ihata Shelter for Abused Women and Children aims to help all women affected by domestic violence who seek safety and support.

The Dis-Chem Foundation, in partnership with CapeTalk, has extended a helping hand to local NGO, the Ihata Shelter.

The Ihata Shelter for Abused Women and Children aims to help all women affected by domestic violence who seek safety and support.

The Dis-Chem Foundation will donate a brand new washing machine, educational toys and books for the children, as well as care kits for abused women.

The Dis-Chem Foundation will also offer the organisation a Dis-Chem store account to purchase goods worth R8000 each month, for a year (valued at R96 000 in total).

The shelter, which is situated in Heideveld, Cape Town, provides women with shelter and holistic care for up to six months.

The Ihata Shelter is open to women from all walks of life, but primarily serve women from the Cape Flats.

The organisation also offers an in-house program for women struggling with substance abuse, rape victims and sex workers; in general women who find themselves vulnerable.

The Ihata Shelter's Nuraan Osman says the organisation was inspired by the need for a safe space for women.

We aim to give them hope.

Nuraan Osman, Director at Ihata

We know the high levels of gender-based violence in our country.

Nuraan Osman, Director at Ihata

Ihata is one of the contributors to making society better by providing safe spaces for women and their children when they find themselves, abused, abandoned and neglected.

Nuraan Osman, Director at Ihata

There's a lot of heart in the organisation. Dischem was blown away by their work.
