Jacqui Kaminer says banking officials were unable to investigate the matter further because police failed to open a case for her.

A Cape Town woman has told the story of how her IT business was almost defrauded through a fake invoice email scam.

Jacqui Kaminer says banking officials were unable to investigate the matter further because police failed to assist her with opening a case.

The scam involves fraudsters using an almost identical email address to that of a genuine business executive, client or supplier.

Typically, the invoices are faked or they are intercepted, and the bank accounts changed.

Jacqui relayed her experience and shared her frustration.

It's a fraud scam.

The invoice that came through had a bank account number on it. It was an FNB bank account number.

I contacted FNB's fraud division. They told me they would block the account number for 24 hours, but I needed to go to the police station to get a case number, affidavit, and a copy of my ID in order to proceed.
