Trump's tweet

Trump says that he has asked his secretary of state to look into the killing of white farmers in SA.

The presidency says Cyril Ramaphosa has 'noted' the tweet posted by US president Donald Trump about land expropriation and the killing of white farmers in South Africa.

In it, Trump says " I have asked Secretary of State to closely study the South Africa land and farm seizures and expropriations and the large-scale killing of farmers"

We have noted the tweet by President Trump and the allegations it makes against the South African government. This is the matter that will be treated with the sensitivity that it deserves and we will do so through the diplomatic channels that are established for this type of process.

Khusela Diko, Spokesperson for President Cyril Ramaphosa

The presidency has already asked the Minister of the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) for clarification from the US embassy regarding this and it is only at that point that we will be able to engage on it further.

Diko says whilst she acknowledges that there are incidents where white farmers were killed, she says the suggestion from Trump is that it is part of government's agenda.

The manner in which it is communicated - as if it is part of our land reform program, there's an agenda that is driven by government and by South Africans to kill all these people and seize land from all these farmers.
