The young man was part of a group of peace ambassadors in Hanover Park who were devoted to advocating for peace within the gang-ridden community.

De Silver was a Grade 11 pupil attending school at Mount View High.

His mother, Natasha Williams, said her son was caught in a gang shoot-out while at the shop, Cape Argus reports.

Professor Brian Williams, who has been involved in training the peace ambassadors in Hanover Park, says De Silver was a quiet and determined boy.

De Silver was one of 69 young people who were trained to become peace ambassadors of Mount View High School.

He says the pupils and school community are struggling with the lost.

He was one of the kids who were really interested in trying to contribute towards building peace in the community of Hanover Park.

Prof. Brian Williams

His death is a deep shock to everybody... It has galvanised the school community even more.

Prof. Brian Williams

It's very painful and extremely distressing.

Prof. Brian Williams

People become so desensitised when the killings are so often. The violence, unabated, uncontrolled, becomes a way of life.

Prof. Brian Williams
