DA opposes IEC application for an extension

DA's representative at the IEC says an extension could open up the electoral process to fraud and manipulation of the voters roll.

The Independent Electoral Commission has approached the Constitutional Court to grant it another extension to collect the addresses of all voters.

The IEC said it won't be able to meet the November deadline, therefore, seeking an extension of additional 18 months.

The DA and the IFP came out opposing the IEC’s application for an extension.

DA's representative at the IEC, Mike Moriarty says that an extension could open up the electoral process to fraud and manipulation of the voters roll.

He says they want to end government institutions dragging their feet and asking for extension after extension.

The court should compel the IEC to do the kind of measures that one would normally expect, for example, get an outbound call centre to call the people on the voters roll and ask for their address.

Mike Moriarty, DA's representative and IEC

We would like to see a situation, whereas in the original court judgment when it said that we are now in a dispensation where it has to be a free and fair election and voters roll without addresses is not a condition to a free and fair election. The IEC has to do its work and we are looking to the Constitutional Court to follow through on its judgment.
