NSFAS applications for 2019 to open on Monday

The Minister of Higher Education and Training Naledi Pandor says the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) applications for 2019 will officially be opened on Monday.

Earlier in August, Pandor announced that submissions will not be opened until strides are made in speeding up the payment backlog to students.

Speaking to Bongani Bingwa, Deputy Director General of Department of Higher education Dr Diane Parker says the most important thing around opening the new cycle was to ensure that they were really dealing with the backlog.

The problem with opening the new applications while that was still a huge backlog, was that we would face a problem where NSFAS would be defusing their focus and too many students were sitting without the funding that they required.

She adds the minister chose not to open applications in August but to rather spend time dealing with critical problems in the system.
