We cannot compromise the safety of our staff and patients says WC health dept

The Hout Bay community is demanding that the Department of health reopen the Hout Bay Day Hospital.

Director of Communications at Western Cape Health Department, Marika Champion says the decision to close the facility was as a result of a number of violent protests in the area.

She says they had to consider the safety of their staff as some of them were caught between fire when these violent protests erupted.

According to Champion, the facility was closed but services are still delivered to the people of Hout Bay from a facility nearby.

It is important to understand that services were not suspended but they continued at an alternative site very close to the current site also in Hout Bay.

These incidents, unfortunately, come with a high level of unpredictability but they come with severe staff and patient safety concerns because it becomes very difficult to render effective services within such conditions.

Champion says they understand the frustrations displayed by the community of Hout Bay but says the safety of their staff cannot be compromised at this point.
