Did Bain & Co. meet with Tom Moyane BEFORE he was appointed as Sars head?

Consulting firm Bain & Company was paid a reported R200 million to restructure Sars.

But it has now emerged that the firm may have met with Tom Moyane to discuss how this might be done BEFORE anyone knew he would be appointed commissioner.

The details have come to light during the Nugent Commission.

Daily Maverick journalist Pauli Van Wyk says it is important to note that testimony by Bain & Co was made under oath by managing partner Vittorio Massone.

What he said under oath while testifying at the Commission of Inquiry into Sars, was that months before, either Mr Moyane or any of us here ought to have known that he would be appointed in September 2014 as Sars Commissioner.

He [Moyane] consulted with Massone of Bain & Co. soliciting his views on what his thoughts were about Sars.

Van Wyk says that Massone drafted a document, spending several hours on someone who had no political power at the time nor was he a Sars commissioner and was a shock when he was appointed.

She says this raises several questions, such as where Moyane derived such bargaining power from to be able to bargain with such a high official at Bain & Co.
