Stellies to offer postgrad degree in fire safety and engineering

The Stellenbosch University's Fire Engineering Research Unit (FireSUN) has been given a boost of R2.9 million that will be used to develop Africa's first-ever postgraduate programme in fire engineering.

Set up in 2017, the unit is the first of its kind on the continent to tackle research into reducing the impact of fire.

Head of Stellenbosch University's FireSUN team Dr Richard Walls says they are setting up a postgraduate masters degree in fire safety and engineering both for civil and mechanical engineers.

A lot of research that we focus on touches on many different aspects of fire safety in South Africa and across the world.

We are busy looking at the Knysna fire disaster and how we can design homes to withstand wildland fire coming through. We are looking at informal settlements and how to improve fire safety there and how do we ensure that buildings don't come down in case of a fire.
