Joburg CBD fire: Health negligence and corruption claims data lost in the fire

The fire that broke in the Department of Health building in Joburg CBD on Wednesday has flared up again with debris and broken glass still falling from the burning building.

Three firefighters died while trying to put out the fire.

CEO of Gauteng EMS, Lesiba Malotana says all three families of the deceased have been notified and their names have been publicised.

Malotana says there were complexities as the firefighters attempted to put out the fire on Wednesday. He says there was a water pressure problem as the water could not reach the 24th floor of the building.

He adds that assistance has been sought to help from other municipalities to help fight the fire that's been raging for the past 24 hours.

There are more than 10 fire engines from the City of Joburg, fire engines from Ekurhuleni and O.R Tambo International has also come out to assist and that's why we are now confident that the fire will be contained.

According to Malotana, the electrical cabling in the building and paper documents caused the fire to spread very quickly to other floors making it difficult to contain.

He says they have sprayed foam on the 12th floor to prevent the fire from spreading beyond the 12th floor.

EWN Reporter, Ahmed Cajee says at a press briefing held by the Department of Health, officials have confirmed that a lot of data has been lost that have not been backed up on computers.

Cajee says that heads of departments will be meeting later today to discuss working plans as work will resume on Friday at a remote site.

There were health negligent claims and corruption claims that were lost in the fire.
