Gender pay parity declared for surfers from 2019 (Finally, says Surfing SA!)

Surfing South Africa has welcomed the decision by The World Surf League (WSL) to offer gender pay parity from 2019.

The sports league says it will pay equal prize money for men and women from next year for every WSL-controlled event.

This follows global outcry in June over the prize money differences at The Ballito Pro surfing event for junior winners.

The female winner only received half the prize money of her male counterpart, sparking outrage online.

Surfing SA is the official governing body of surfing in the country.

General manager Robin De Kock says executives at WSL have clearly taken public feedback seriously.

He says, however, that gender parity should begin now and not next year.

De Kock says the prize money announced may encourage other female surfers to compete in the sport.

I think it's only right. It's about time.

It cost the same amount of money for them to get to the competition. Their equipment costs the same.

They have to train just as hard, they have to go to the gym, and pay the same gym fee costs.

It just doesn't make any sense that the prize money should be different.
