'My child came out as transgender' - advice on sex ed and modern-day parenting

Parents in this day and age face new challenges when it comes to sexuality education, says clinical sexologist Dr Eve.

Dr Eve says that parents today need to bring in the complex layers of sexual flexibility, plasticity and abuse when discussing sexuality.

She says parents are obligated to learn about the current sexuality issues that their children are exposed to on a daily basis.

These include topics such as gender identities, sexual orientation, diverse and non-binary relationship structures, genetic sexual attraction, sexual abuse, sex work, sexual desires and more.

Today, to be a parent it's not good enough to do the old-fashioned sex ed, which most people haven't done.

You as a parent have got an obligation and responsibility to expand yourself in a creative way to be including these points of discussion with your children when you are talking to them about intimacy, their bodies, their sexuality and their sexual health.

Parents have to step back and do the work of finding comfortability, tolerance, education and support groups for themselves while supporting their children.

If you deny, negate, punish or criminalise, the children will suffer in terms of their mental health later in life.
