'Roman Catholic church needs to take responsibility for allegations of abuse'

Following numerous allegations of abuse within the Roman Catholic Church, Father Russel Pollitt, Director at the Jesuit Institute says the church needs to stop scapegoating and do some serious internal reflection of the position the church finds itself in.

He says the whole church needs to take responsibility of what is going on, not only those high up in the hierarchy but within the congregation as well.

People in the benches have been complicit by their silence because they know things and they don't say anything

Father Russel Pollitt, Director at Jesuit Institute

I think the whole church has to rethink its attitude towards this and I think there should be an in-depth study in the way that we train the priests and we need to ask questions about the power structures in our parishes.

Father Russel Pollitt, Director at Jesuit Institute

Pollit says the government system of the church has somehow become unaccountable and the structure of the hierarchy needs to be relooked at.

The bishop holds most of the power and makes most of the decisions, even though he is accountable to the Pope who is in Rome, the Pope is far away. He is supposed to keep the priest and the bishops accountable but this is where the system at the moment has failed.

Father Russel Pollitt, Director at Jesuit Institute

So you have this all powerful person who is heading up the church where there is very little accountability structure.
