Cape Town hopes to score 2023 Netball World Cup hosting bid

The municipal and provincial government in the Cape are putting their money behind a bid to host the 2023 Netball World Cup.

Netball SA is in the process of bidding to host the cup, which could see a historic event in the country, should it succeed.

Netball SA President Cecilia Molokwane explains that it could be the first time that a woman-dominated sport hosts a World Cup in SA since the dawn of democracy.

Netball is the biggest female sport in the country.

Since the democracy of South Africa, not a single woman-led sport has ever hosted a World Cup. We said why don't we go for it.

Cecilia Molokwane, Netball South Africa president

We believe we are ready. We've got the resources to host the World Cup and we've got players that can help us win.

If the bid is successful, the event will be hosted at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) in July 2023.

The announcement about the winning host nation will be made in April 2019.
