'Cities should up their stake in supporting the philharmonic orchestras'

Minister of Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa say due to budget cuts, the department will not be able to sponsor some of the programmes which they've been sponsoring over the years.

One of those programmes to be affected by this is the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) which receives R7 million from the department.

Mthethwa says when they were informed of the budget cuts last year, the department contacted all the CEOs of the Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestras to inform them that their sponsorship will be cut.

He says that the discussion suggested that the cities in which these orchestras operate should start sponsoring them and let the national department focus on the national orchestra.

According to Mthethwa, Mayor of Joburg, Herman Mashaba came to the party and sponsored the Johannesburg Philharmonic orchestra R20 million.

He says there is nothing stopping other cities from doing the same.

We were saying let's follow what other countries do in that the cities take care of their Philharmonic orchestras. We would continue with the National Philharmonic Orchestra.

Nathi Mthethwa, Minister of Arts and Culture

We said to the CEOs we would be prepared to work with them to engage provinces and cities to up their stake and Johannesburg came to the party and actually gave the Johannesburg Philharmonic orchestra triple what we were giving them. They gave them R20 million.

Nathi Mthethwa, Minister of Arts and Culture

We really expect eThekwini and Cape Town to do exactly the same as Johannesburg.
