'One suicide every hour in South Africa'

September 10 is World Suicide Prevention Day and the purpose of the day is to raise awareness around the globe that suicide can be prevented.

The day is looking at promoting worldwide commitment and action to prevent suicide.

Speaking to Xolani Gwala, Doctor in the Psychology Department at the University of Stellenbosch Dr Jason Bantjes says suicide is preventable even though it is hard work to prevent it.

It is a complicated business because it requires such an integrated and multi-level approach but it is absolutely possible to prevent suicide.

We have about one completed suicide every hour in South Africa. The national statistics suggest that the prevalence rate is about 14 per 100 000.

He adds that the figures don't mean that we are the worst countries in the world as there are other countries that have a much higher suicide rate.
