The pollution, in the form of contaminated water, has spread through roads, homes and even the Vaal River.
Eyewitness news reporter Thando Khubeka visited the area to see the extent of the crisis.

This is a health hazard because it becomes a breeding ground for water-borne diseases.— Thando Khubeka, EWN reporter
Khubeka says they had to navigate their way through the rubbish that is pilling on the streets as they were driving by.
It appeared though that refuse collection is poor or it's not happening as there is rubbish everywhere.— Thando Khubeka, EWN reporter
I also spoke to parents from the school called Lebohang Secondary School. They say the children there fall sick daily. They have been taken to the nearest clinic with sicknesses such as cholera, diarrhoea, skin rashes and they are not doing well at school.— Thando Khubeka, EWN reporter
