[LISTEN] Author Landa Mabenge pens 'trans memoir of triumph' to help others heal

Cape Town resident and author Landa Mabenge has penned a memoir about his journey as a transgender man.

The debut book, Becoming Him: A Trans Memoir of Triumph, describes his triumph over a turbulent and abusive childhood, and his triumphant journey to embrace his identity.

From an early age, Landa was aware that he does not relate to his female form, despite being socialised as a girl.

Raised by abusive parents, he kept a countdown of the number of days left before he could escape his household to attend univeristy.

He opened up about his struggles at university, his battle with depression and suicidal thoughts, his gender transition, and advocacy work.

Mabenge says he shared his story in order to help others who are in need of healing or fighting their own obstacles.

I moved from love, into a space of hatred and I had to adjust extremely quickly.
