The Sunday Times published a report which alleges that the group was discussing a plot to unseat President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The ANC leaders who met with former President Jacob Zuma's in Durban last week must have known that their meeting would result in media attention and public speculation.

So says political analyst Ralph Mathekga.

The Sunday Times published a report which alleges that the group was discussing a plot to unseat President Cyril Ramaphosa.

According to Mathekga, the implicated ANC officials may have been sending a message to Ramaphosa.

He says the ANC's response to the reposts has been incoherent because of long-standing divisions within the ruling party.

The reason why the ANC is all over the place is because there is a clear indication and acknowledgement within the ANC that there is a division.

Ralph Mathekga, political analyst

There is a strong perception that those people who met up [with Zuma] are the usual suspects when it comes to an attempt to topple President Ramaphosa.

Ralph Mathekga, political analyst

I don't see people here who tried to meet in secret.

Ralph Mathekga, political analyst

They knew exactly that their meeting would reverberate in this manner.

Ralph Mathekga, political analyst

Maybe they deliberately wanted to send a message to the President that says 'we are watching you'.

Ralph Mathekga, political analyst

They cannot pretend to be caught surprised by the public attention to this.

Ralph Mathekga, political analyst

Meanwhile, labour federation Cosatu and ANC chief whip Jackson Mthembu have called for the allegations to be urgently investigated.
