[LISTEN] Slain Joburg firefighters remembered

The memorial service of three firefighters who lost their lives last week while trying to extinguish the Bank of Lisbon building fire is underway.

Eyewitness News reporter Mia Lindeque says it was an emotional scene when the firefighters visited the building to lay flowers.

She says the firefighters say they never imagined they would lose three of their colleagues at the same time.

There was a moment during the wreath laying moment when some of the firefighters dressed in their full uniform were standing there and started crying.

It was a very difficult moment for all the officials, even the JMPD officers.

It was the first time some of the family members went to the scene, they say they wanted to get closure.

It has since emerged that building failed to meet safety standards and its since been evacuated.
