Cape community plans a mass shutdown against crime and gangsterism

Communities in the Cape Flats are calling for an end to crime and gang violence. They are planning a mass shutdown in October which will include blockading main entrances to these areas and a march to Parliament to submit a memorandum of grievances.

Deputy Chair at Elsies River CPF, Imraahn Mukaddam says this is about putting an ultimatum to the government to start doing what they are supposed to be doing.

We are refusing to live under this imposed civil war and we need government to act because it is a state of emergency.

57 murders a day is a war, it is not a normal society we should be living in.

Mukaddam says he is confident that this march will yield results and they will be able to take control of their streets again.

For us right now it is about galvanising our communities and take ownership of our streets again and we can only do that through rolling mass action.
