NW police investigating alleged drug peddling amid tensions in Klerksdorp

North West police are investigating allegations of drug peddling in Klerksdorp following unrest in the town this week.

Violence erupted in the town after a 28-year-old Zimbabwean man was stabbed to death allegedly by a group of taxi drivers. It’s alleged the group wanted revenge after one of their colleagues was killed.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has dropped murder charges against nine of the 12 suspects arrested for the killing.

Several properties were torched, with taxi drivers claiming these buildings were drug dens and brothels.

Eyewitness News reporter Pelane Phakgadi has been following the story.

Taxi drivers in the area have told Eyewitness News that they have been at loggerheads with foreign nationals for some time now and have been reporting them to officials about alleged drug dealing operations but that has not been bearing any fruit, despite the police saying that there have been operations in the area and arrests...

Pelane Phakgadi, EWN reporter

The murder cases have been dropped because there is no proof linking then to the unrest and killings. 12 tax drivers are being charged with arson and public violence.

Pelane Phakgadi, EWN reporter

Police say they are talking to some of the residents and foreign nationals to get to the bottom of the allegations. We understand there is a task team that has been initiated in the area.
